Betta Spitting Out His Food
If he gets stubborn about it switch foods.
Betta spitting out his food. However this doesn t mean he s not eating. The most common reason your betta is spitting out food is simply that it s too big. My fish splash hates flakes and will only eat pellets. It would take a heck of a lot of starvation to kill these fish due to not eating.
When your fish is accepting that you can introduce a small number of pellets or flake foods. Try some live bloodworms or live brine shrimp if all else fails either one will almost always entice your betta into eating. So in a lot of cases your betta will spit food out a couple of times because he literally can t swallow it. Or is possible he s not used to eating pellets he may have been on flakes.
Your betta s stomach is roughly the size of its eyeball and some pellets are even bigger than that. He is probobly seeking a little attention. What kind of food are you giving him. But if not he won t worry about getting it back until later when he is hungary again.
In nature they hunt live insects and such so he s just doing what comes naturally. Bettas play with their food. My betta does the same thing. Even if he keeps spitting out food dont worry.
This too is common behavior and it s believed to be a mechanism for breaking down and softening the food. Bettas often do not prefer flakes and will eat them at the last resort. And when you over feed your fish and that food gets spit out it sinks to the bottom of your tank and makes for bad water. If they are hungary they will continue to repeat this with the pellot.
My last fish did not eat for like 1 week. Your fish might just not be hungry. Also it might just depend on the fish. At first i was worried as well.
Sometimes betta owners become concerned when they see that their pet is spitting out his food. But they just eat a little bit and spit it out. He was eating fine until in the 1 5 tank until i moved him into the 5 5 gal. Also remember the betta fish stomach is only the size of their eyeball and it takes these fish literally 2 weeks to starve to death.
They do not eat as much as we think they do. Don t be alarmed if the betta spits out its food. It doesn t usually take too long before a juvenile betta fish gets used to his captive diet and stops spitting out food. My suggestion is to switch to a different type of betta food and give him a treat often like blood worms.
Atleast your fish is giving an effort. Sometimes he may be taking small bites out of the food. Don t worry hope i helped. This is particularly true for bettas who have a reputation for being picky eaters.
I don t use anything other than flakes pellets and ants myself due to cost personally. Ever since i moved my betta from a 1 5 gallon tank to a 5 5 gallon my betta has been spitting out his food. This tends to spoil your betta and some people claim unproccessed food has an increased risk of disease.
